Recent revelations of corruption at Moonee Valley Council have uncovered serious allegations of drug-related misconduct. An IBAC report found that a former mayor accepted drugs such as cocaine and Xanax in exchange for expediting property developments and bypassing council procedures. The mayor’s involvement with a local developer, known as “the construction manager,” included multiple favours and preferential treatment for personal gain, with evidence showing bribes through drug transactions from 2020 to 2022. These actions not only corrupted decision-making but also damaged public trust in local governance. The relevant question that has to be asked is – “are these latest revelations a one off or is this indicative of a wider drug issue across the political and white-collar sector?”
At TDDA, we believe that workplace drug testing should not be limited to just safety-sensitive roles. Last year, TDDA collaborated with Victorian MP Nick McGowan to discuss drug testing for Victorian politicians, even conducting a symbolic drug test on Parliament’s steps. The goal was to emphasise the importance of ethical integrity in high-impact positions, particularly in politics, where decisions can affect millions (of people and dollars).
Our work with the white collar sectors and our participation in discussions around expanding drug testing into the political realm reflect our commitment to ensuring public trust. The ability to assist businesses in designing and implementing drug testing programs that help maintain a safe, productive and trusted workplace is paramount. The ideal should be that workplace drug testing can (and does) support all employees, from the boardroom to the front lines, in contributing to an ethical, drug-free work environment.
Broader Workplace Drug Testing: Responding to the Victorian Inquiry
This call for accountability comes at a pivotal moment, as the recent Inquiry into Workplace Drug Testing in Victoria focused primarily on workplace drug testing for safety-sensitive roles. However, the latest developments, including recent articles, suggest that we should be openly discussing the scope of drug testing being expanded beyond traditional sectors like construction or transport. Now, there is growing recognition that white-collar industries, and those involved in high-impact decision-making, should also adopt drug testing practices to safeguard their operations, protect reputations, and foster a culture of transparency and integrity. The role of workplace drug testing is to offer a comprehensive solution tailored to the needs of the individual organisation. From politicians making critical public decisions to employees working on sensitive projects, or the more traditional safety roles, drug testing provides the peace of mind that your workforce is functioning at its best.
A Holistic Approach to Drug Testing
By adopting a proactive and preventive approach to workplace drug testing, companies can mitigate risks before they arise, ensure compliance, and build a culture of accountability.
